The spiritual patron of the university left a cultural heritage to humankind, conveying generations to come, through ancient myths from The Metamorphoses, a message of passion and devotedness, of love, of creation, of evolution and transformation. "Ovidius" University has the mission of creating, maintaining and distributing knowledge to society through education, scientific research and artistic creation at European standards. The university is in the service of the community but has an influence in the whole Black Sea area, in Europe and beyond.

    About Constanta

"Ovidius" University is a defining landmark of Constanta municipality, an ancient metropolis whose history begins more than 2500 years ago. Founded by the Greek colonists from Milet in the 6th century B.C., Tomis was conquered by the romans in the year 71 B.C. and renamed as Constantiana by emperor Constantin the Great, in his sister's honor. The name was shortened to Constanta during the Ottoman epoch. During the 13th century, Genovese merchants especially dominated the Black Sea and thus Constanta flourished, and after declined, two centuries later during Turkish domination. The city started to flourish once again in the 19th century with the harbor development and the construction of the bridge over Danube. King Carol the First had a considerable role in developing the city as a main commercial node and spa retreat. Constanta developed continuously in the last years becoming the largest city in the region. Constanta harbor is the largest European harbor situated at the Black Sea and one of the largest on the continent. The city is linked to the capital and the rest of the country by a modern highway, to Europe through the Danube-Black Sea Channel and to the world through an international airport. Constanta is an important economic and cultural center, unique through its archeological treasures and the atmosphere in the old town. Its opening to all directions makes Constanta one of the most cosmopolitan cities of the country. An ethnic and confessional mosaic, a place of communication and accord, the seaside municipality is a city which draws in young people. In summer it is a preferential destination for holidays and in the rest of the year it is a metropolis for students. Spaces for sports, cultural events and fun make Constanta a vibrating city, a city of young people.
